Seven Rohingya illegal immigrants arrested on south-bound train to Hat Yai

January 19, 2018 | By Thai PBS

Seven Rohingya illegal immigrants were detained for questioning yesterday (Jan 18) after railway police apprehended them at Thung Song railway station while they were on a south bound train from Nakhon Pathom to Hat Yai.

Security officials suspected the Rohingyas, five men and two women, were on their way to a third country.

All are now detained at Thung Song police station in Nakhon Si Thammarat province for interrogation.

Thung Song police said at this stage they could not yet say if the Rohingya illegal immigrants were smuggled into the country by human trafficking gang before fleeing into a third country.

They said interpreters have been called in to help with the interrogation of the seven Rohingyas to find out where they came from and which route they took to escape into Thailand.

If they are involved with human trafficking gang, they will face legal action, and if not, they will sent back to country they came from, police said.

Nakhon News Online, a local media based in Nakhon Si Thammarat reported that initial interrogation of the seven Rohingyas found that they travelled from their homes in Bangladesh to Myanmar and sneaked into Thailand in Kanchanaburi. They planned to travel further to Malaysia to work with their relatives there.
